EquusST Stable Treatment - Bedding Inoculant for Horses
|
Ammonia in the stable or loosebox is a big problem for horses. Ammonia is a pungent nitrogenous substance commonly present as a contaminant in the air and bedding of the stable. It is produced through the action of micro-organisms as they degrade urea (present in animal urine) or organic matter present in the faeces. Ammonification of urea by these bacteria is dependent upon the enzyme urease . |
|
The problem is exacerbated when deep litter systems are used, particularly those ultilising straw, paper, or wood products as the bedding material. These systems produce a moist warm environment in which microbial urease action is accelerated. Of these bedding materials, straw creates the greatest problems in terms of ammonia levels.
The use of rubber matting, particularly where drainage is poor, allows urine to get under the mat which can also lead to the build up of ammonia, particularly if very little bedding has been applied. If it can accumulate in wooden floors, particularly in trailers, it can continue to release ammonia long after the rubber matting above has been cleaned. Inadequate ventilation compounds this problem as it prevents removal of the noxious vaporised form of ammonia, thereby causing its concentration in the air to rise.
Harmful effects of ammonia
It is well documented that ammonia has direct and indirect effects upon the health of both horses and people. Ammonia is highly soluble in body fluids such as tears, where it raises the pH thereby causing irritation of the sensitive eye membranes and the epithelia of the respiratory system. In humans it can therefore exacerbate any underlying chronic lung condition such as asthma, and can increase the likelihood of developing further chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) such as bronchitis.
Equine health can equally also be compromised, for example ammonia can irritate the epithelia of the airways, stimulating mucus production and inhibiting the wafting action of the hair-like cilia thereby reducing their ability to remove dust, bacteria and spore from the lungs. Prolonged exposure to high levels of inhaled ammonia increases the risk posed by opportunistic pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, and places the horse at increased risk of conditions such as COPD.
Equus Stable Treatment
Achieves ammonia control in horse stables, housing enclosures, trailers and other hard surfaces by elimination of odour causing bacteria.
- High concentration of bacteria that remove ammonia present in the bedding.
- Specific inhibitors prevent further production of ammonia by undesirable microorganisms.
- Improves air quality and reduces respiratory impact on the horse.
- Can also be used in trailers and temporary housing situations.
- Safe and easy to use as a liquid spray.
“Equus Stable Treatment helps freshen up the barn and eliminate the ammonia smell.
Even in the cold weather when you need to keep the barn closed up the air is fresher and healthier for both the people and horses. With the once a week application, the air stays refreshed.”

“I used Equus Stable Treatment in March when the weather was cold and the barn was closed up. Normally ammonia will tend to build up during these times. While I used Equus Stable Treatment the ammonia smell was greatly reduced. It was healthier for the horses, easier for us to be inside and the barn did not have the ammonia smell when customers came to look at horses.
Equus Stable Treatment worked very well for us.”

"I am the owner of a Quarter Horse breeding ranch. I have used Equus Stable Treatment since the beginning of the 2008 breeding season and I am very pleased with the results.
I am very pleased with the service and the product. I would recommend it to any of my colleagues."

"I have used Equus Stable Treatment in the Stallion Barn, Breeding Barn, and the Foaling Barn.
In the Stallion Barn, Equus Stable Treatment helped eliminate the ammonia build up. During breeding season the stallions will tend to urinate a lot marking their territory. This tends to leave the barn with a noticeable ammonia smell. The Equus Stable Treatment took care of the ammonia smell.
In the Breeding Barn we tend to develop a strong ammonia smell. We have a single area were we collect the stallions and where the teaser mares urinate. We used Equus Stable Treatment in these areas and it really help remove the ammonia. It was especially noticeable when we ran out of Equus Stable Treatment for a couple of weeks. The ammonia smell came back. After we received the new supply of Equus Stable Treatment and treated the area the ammonia smell disappeared quickly.
In the Foaling Barn we also tried the Equus Stable Treatment. Even with all the amniotic fluid from foaling Equus Stable Treatment helped to keep the foaling stall a lot fresher. Any time you can reduce the ammonia it is better for the horses and the people working with them."
