A large portion of the ration energy intake for ruminants comes from the fermentation of plant cell walls labelled as neutral-detergent fiber (NDF). Effective degradation of is primarily via rumen microbial enzymes secreted during microbial adhesion on accessible plant tissue. More than 99% of rumen bacteria are strict anaerobes, being intolerant of even small amounts of oxygen which enters the rumen during feeding.
Moreover, depending on whether a ration is based on higher grain or higher forage inclusions, the ruminal digestion of the ingested carbohydrate fractions will generate VFAs and some lactate shifting rumen pH towards acidic consequentially resulting in sub-acute rumen acidosis (SARA). Prolonged bouts of SARA can be extremely detrimental to the cow leading to a decrease in fibrolytic bacteria populations; disrupted dry matter intake and variable milk production.
Mode of Action
UltraCell® the selected Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain scavenges oxygen in rumen inducing more favourable conditions for anaerobic communities. Subsequently, the growth of cellulolytic and lactic acid utilizing bacteria is improved which leads to ruminal pH stabilisation and a decreased risk of SARA.
Moreover, UltraCell® stimulates the fibre breakdown in the rumen thus reducing the residue of material potentially degraded in the hindgut which leads to improved overall feed efficiency. UltraCell® holds a EU registration Gut flora stabiliser 4b1871 for dairy cows.
